What to Check in Your Tattoo Lettering

Once a style catches your eye, enlarge the preview and read it letter by letter. Check whether an elaborate capital crowds the next letter, whether any letters could be mistaken for one another, and whether the punctuation is clear.

Try changing the capitalization too. “Always” and “ALWAYS” can produce very different compositions in the same font. For a quote, preview the entire sentence; a decorative style that works for one word may feel crowded across several. For dates, years or other number tattoos, compare the shapes of the digits and double-check every number and separator.
